IN MEMORY OF CHRIS POWELL
October 18, 2005
I was asked to put something together in memory of Chris
(aka C-Po) who died tragically on October 15th, 2005 while
at a tournament in Montreal.
Chris Powell (Player on BigFish 2004-2005, Carleton Chess
Club 2004-2005, Phoenix 2003, Captain of Carleton intramural
team Fresh Meat (FM) 2003-2005). As one of his co-captains
on BigFish, I was fortunate enough to play with C-Po for the
past two years. He was a great ambassador for the game as
his sheer enjoyment of the sport encouraged others to give
it a try. I have spent a lot of time talking to my friends
and teammates about him to get feedback on what they thought
of him as a friend and player, and these are some of the
words that came to mind:
* Heart - Chris was all heart both on and off the field. He
gave it all and never asked for anything in return.
* Dedicated - He was always there; be it practice, a special
event or a gathering, you could count on Chris no matter
what.
* Supportive - You always had someone to talk to about
anything, and remarkably he would always be able to make
you feel better about yourself.
* Genuine - Chris was an honest and true person; you always
knew where you stood with him - no question!
* Vocal - C-Po was a huge contributor to team spirit, his
sideline encouragement and cheering brought out the best
in his teammates.
* Fun - This one was huge; whether he was laughing at
himself or someone else, wearing polyester with
unbelievable style or dancing, C-Po was always great to be
around because he was always having fun.
* Leadership - Although he was only 21 years old, Chris
commanded more presence and respect than some people
double his age. He instilled confidence in those around
him both on and off the field.
Some of the other terms that came to mind were cute,
brotherly, mature, personable, generous, loyal and easy to
relate to. Chris Powell was a man of great promise and he
was taken from this world much too soon.
C-Po - your teammates, friends and family will miss you
terribly, but will take comfort that your spirit will always
surround us no matter where we are.
We love you
Kristi Dean, on behalf of all of your friends on BigFish
2004-2005
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Chris Powell Memorial
Fund, c/o Development and Alumni, Carleton University, 1125
Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario, K1S 5B6, to create a
Bursary in Chris' honour, would be appreciated.

THE FUTURE OF OCUA
What do we want ultimate in Ottawa to look like in five
years time? The OCUA membership (that's you!) has asked the
Board to answer this question by drafting a five year plan
for the association.
We need your help in preparing that plan and shaping the
future of OCUA.
In developing our five year plan, OCUA wants to tap into as
much expertise as possible from our 4,500 members. In fact,
this plan is being developed as an online collaborative
project, to which you all are invited to participate. Have
a look at our project web site to see what we are up to at
http://www.ocua.jot.com
We are looking to get people involved at a whole bunch of
levels. All the details are online:
http://ocua.jot.com/GetInvolved
Can you see a role for yourself in this? Or can you think of
someone else who would be just perfect? If yes, please
email Board member Mark Bedard [mark.ultimate "at-sign"
gmail.com] and let us know.

skills development based on specific player interest. This
is the best possible way in which to learn about the sport
of ultimate, to improve your game, and have lots of fun
while you're doing it.
Where: Hornet's Nest - Thunderdome
When: November 17th to April 6th, 20 dates, no games on Dec.
29th.
Game slots: 7pm to 12am.
Cost: $200/player, 88 spots available.

Please ensure that you write your Leaguerunner membership
number and the desired session on the memo line of your

The league format tested last year proved to be particularly
effective according to the participants and will be repeated
again this year. The structure consisted of a three game
round robin, followed by a clinic, after which the teams
were reformed for another round robin. This pattern was
repeated for the balance of the season. Once again this year
the competitive women will be coaching this exceptionally
well run indoor division. They will be ably led by Stella
team Captain, Alison Lemay. (Did we mention that our
competitive ladies formed part of the only Canadian women's
team to make it to the Ultimate Players Association Club
Championships Tournament in Florida? They are just that
good!)
As a result of this exposure to expert coaching and clinic
instruction there was a marked improvement in the caliber of
play by the members participating in these indoor sessions.
Additionally they in turn took their increased knowledge &
skill back to their summer teams. Whether you are a newer
player wanting to learn the basics, an experienced player
looking for lots of disc time, or a mid-tier player looking
for a boost to the next level, this very successful league
is the place for you.
